I love stamps!

Hey everyone, I am Desmond. This blog is about my stamp collecting journey and some thoughts about the hobby. I have thought of doing some simple videos to share this wonderful world of philately with everybody but it has been proven that I am not good at presenting in front of a video camera and being absolutely clueless about footage editing doesn’t help either. There are other professionally done videos on YouTube channels such as “Exploring Stamps” and “Stampcat Stamps” and they are magnificent! Not wanting to do a disservice to philately, I have started this blog instead, hoping to promote the hobby. Having said that, please allow me to introduce myself-

It has been about 4 years now since I started collecting stamps. It all started when I first stumbled upon my mother’s old stamp albums that were laid hidden in a cabinet. I was admiring the artwork of the stamps that she had collected when she was a child, they were housed in old and tattered book albums but they were filled with a riot of colours from an assortment of stamps. I thought it would be a pity to throw these lovely stamps away, so I bought a new album to give these minuscule pieces of paper a new lease of life and as I was arranging them into their new album, believe me, I got sucked into this hobby, Jumanji style.

My mother’s stamps which I had them moved to a new album.

So many stamps with different designs and colours.

My mother has agreed to pass them on to me.

One thing led to another and before I knew it, I was neck-deep in stamps. Fast forward to today, after amassing a somewhat decent number of stamps, I am proud to say that I have a collection of my own! My interest are mainly in Singapore stamps and stamps about space exploration because these are subjects that I can relate to as I am a Singaporean who loves Astronomy.

I have recently expended my collection to include:

  1. Philatelic materials used during the Japanese Occupation
  2. A small collection of Malaysia stamps
  3. Chinese stamps
  4. British omnibus series
  5. Covid-19 related stamps

Also, I am a participant of Postcrossing, an online platform that allows people exchange postcards from around the world. Though I am not that active in this endeavour as of late.

That is all for my self-introduction. There are a number of ways that this blog could go from here, it could either end up as an educational platform or just a place for me to geek out and goof around. Everything is still in an exploratory phase right now. I wish to seek your understanding if you have found any erroneous information here, you can drop me a message and I will look into it ASAP, thank you.

In the next entry, I will be introducing common tools that we use in the hobby. Till next time!
