A mysterious cover

 

A Malayan FDC introducing free primary school education, cancelled in Singapore.

Bought this cover with a strange postmark which I have never seen before. 

The front of the cover is normal, it was cancelled at the GPO (counter J) but one of the postmarks at the back of the cover has no indication of the delivery post office and the word "Singapore" is missing. Both have been omitted by thick black lines.

The dealer whom I bought this cover from couldn’t find any records in the Proud Bailey postal history books but he highly suspects that the original date stamp bearing the delivery post office branch was damaged and they had to use a replacement, which was a generic date stamp that only had the date on it. 

I was told that the post office likely to deliver this cover was Tanglin Post Office, as this branch delivered mail to the District 10 area.

Today, 15 February 2022, marks the 80th Anniversary of the Fall of Singapore to the Japanese in World War II. 15th of February is also designated as Total Defence Day, a national policy that encompasses the six pillars of defence - military, civil, economic, social, psychological and digital.   Syonan-to was the name given to Singapore during the Japanese Occupation, it means “Light of the South”. Story time! This is a Prisoner-of-War postcard sent to a certain Mr. E.G.Hebditch in Syonan-To, the name given to Singapore during the Japanese Occupation. Now note that this person, E.G.Hebditch, was not a military personnel but a British civilian because of the salutation "Mr.' and not a military rank was stated. That is why the postcard was addressed to a civilian internment camp in Changi Prison. The military POWs and civilians were kept separately inside the camp. Note the red Japanese inspection seal on the front of the postcard. Mr. Hebditch stayed in Singapore at a time when many British civilians had already evacuated the island before war came to its shores.
